Are Playstation 2 Memory Cards not compatible with Playstation Games?

Okay, a friend of mine at my university let me borrow his Final Fantasy VII game. The ORIGINAL game. And I was playing and went to save, but it said both of my memory card slots are empty when i have a 8MB PS2 Memory Card in there. So that is my question. Is it that or is it that the game is so old they figured nobody would play it on a PS2.
All the above answerers are correct, but I thought I would add this: Make sure it is a Sony brand PS1 memory card. Some off-brand PS1 cards can’t be read by the PS2, and data can easily be corrupted on generic memory cards.
to save a PS1 title while playing on a PS2 you will require a PS1 Memory card, silly yes, stupid yes, Sony being fools and not thinking ahead with backwards compatability Yes!
You can not save PS1 games on a PS2 memory card. You can buy a PS1 memory card and it will work with you PS2.hope this helps you
Memory cards are only good for the games current for that system. So you can’t save ps1 games on a ps2, and you can’t save ps2 games on a ps3 (unless you can save it directly to the harddrive, which I don’t think is an option, since the game is ps2 wired.)
Basically the system accesses the programming in the game in order to determine what the game recognizes. Because the hardware was made after the game, there aren’t any updates for it, unless they make a remake for the system itself.
No you need to go find a PS1 mem card pissed me off when I tried to play Final Fantasy Tactics and couldn’t save
