Yes you can…
There is a menu called "Special Ops" which allows you and your friend to do missions together. If you have played the first Modern Warfare, you might remember the last mission, "The Mile High Club" where you are posed with a scenario to save a VIP off a plane that has been rigged with explosives. The special ops are similar to that mission.
However, unfortunately, you can’t play the main mission on offline split-screen co-operative (or 2 players going through the missions) as in the first one.
Finally, If none of that appeals to you, you and your friend could always play on an offline, "Free For All", "Team Deathmatch", etc. multiplayer battle. And fortunately, up-to 4 players are allowed in the normal offline multiplayer mode.
Finally as an alternative, you could always get Modern Warfare 1, if you haven’t played it before. Or you could get Modern Warfare 2 on computer. There is a modification on computer which allows you to play 2-players campaign co-operative over Local-Area-Network.
