Can you play playstation 1 games on a playstation 2 game console?

Okay, so I have a playstation one, and I was interested in buying a playstation 2 console because I keep hearing and reading all over the internet that playstation 1 games can be played on a playstation 2 console; however, I want to hear from someone that actually has one and knows this for a fact. So can you play playstation one games on a playstation 2 game console?
You can play all previous play station games eg ps1 or ps2 on a ps3 and play ps1 games on a ps2. Simple answer yes u can
