I know the 40 GB model is locked-out from playing PlayStation 2 games, but is that also true for original PlayStation games?

Such as the original Tomb Raider, 2, 3, last revealation, chronicle games released for the Sony Playstation and the PS1. Can they run on the PS2?

I received a playstation 3 as a gift and I still don’t have any games for it. I love video games but I have always had Nintendo game systems. I’m a 21 year old girl and most of the games I see for the PS3 don’t really appeal to me. I’ve always loved Nintendo with Mario games and stuff like that. Any suggestions about what kind of game I should get for my PS3?
